Penny Rushing
Program Director
Penny Rushing, also known as "The Kipi Chick," is a passionate musician from Montague, Michigan. Her musical journey began at age 40, when her husband took her to pick out a ukulele. After 7 years of self-teaching struggles, Penny found an ukulele course online and finally persevered and performed at her first open mic night 4 months later, and was surprised by the positive feedback on her voice.
Now a grandmother of three, Penny performs at local venues, weddings, festivals, and community events, and also writes and plays her own music. She also runs the open mic nights where she once debuted, and started a community ukulele club that welcomes players of all ages and skill levels.
Penny’s infectious love for music and resilience have made her a local fixture in the Montague music scene, encouraging others to pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles. Her story exemplifies overcoming self-doubt, as she balances music with family life.
Penny’s journey, from struggling with her ukulele to becoming a beloved local performer and community leader, highlights her dedication and the joy she finds in sharing music with others.
